Excite Students about Science and
Meet California Standards!
FOSSŪ California is a complete, modular, research-based K-5 science curriculum for teaching science in interesting and engaging ways. FOSS is developed at the Lawrence Hall of Science, University of California at Berkley with input from California scientists and educators to provide teachers with all the resources they need to teach science effectively and efficiently.
Based on cognitive research about how children think and learn, FOSS uses an active learning teaching approach. Students assume the role of scientists by making observations, asking questions, making predictions, collaborating and communicating with peers, and conducting experiments to test ideas and verify results. Following the active investigations, students apply and reinforce what they have learned through reading and writing. FOSS excites students and motivates them for more advanced study in science.
FOSS is a standards-based program that aligns completely with the Science Content Standards for California Public Schools and the Science Framework for California. Through extensive research and field-testing, the FOSS developers produced a developmentally-appropriate science curriculum that provides multiple exposures to all California science content standards for in-depth student learning.
FOSS is a modular curriculum of active learning and content area reading. The scope and sequence of the modules is consistent with the California science framework while providing flexibility and balance. The hands-on investigations and readings are cohesive and connected and build on each other to lead students to a comprehensive understanding of the science concepts.
FOSS includes a comprehensive assessment system to monitor and measure student learning. Strategies and tools are included to determine students’ entry level skills and measure progress at regular intervals during instruction, including a summative review.
