Animals Two by Two - Land Snail Update
Land snails are required to conduct Parts 1 (Land Snails) and 2 (Snails Races) of Investigation 2: Land and Water Snails from the Animals Two by Two module.
The following states allow the transport of land snails with a valid permit. To obtain a valid permit, follow the instructions on the Obtaining Land Snails Checklist .
AZ CA NM TX WA
If your state does not permit the transport of land snails, see the alternatives below.
While you are unable to conduct Parts 1 and 2 of Investigation 2: Land and Water Snails, you will be able to conduct the majority of Part 3 (Observing Water Snails) with the exception of the last step (#7, page 21), where students compare land and water snails. Part 4 (Shells) can be done in its entirety.
You might also consider conducting Investigation 5: Eggs and Chicks. This is currently an optional activity, so the equipment is not included in the kit. This activity is extremely rewarding, but there are several things for you to consider before diving in.
1. You will need to have a place for the chicks to go after you complete the activity. Consult a local feed store for advice.
2. The chicks will require at least 6 weeks of your attentionevery day including weekends and holidays.
3. You will need a source for fertile eggs. It is best if you find a local supplier for these eggs as they often get jostled around too much and are not temperature-controlled during shipment.
4. Because this activity is optional, you will need to purchase the equipment.
