Grades 6-8 FOSS Components

FOSS builds on its success as an elementary inquiry-based science program by offering research-based courses for NYC Middle Schools. Each FOSS middle school kit includes:

Equipment Kits

Active learning requires materials. The FOSS program includes those materials in sturdy equipment kits that contain enough consumable items for five compete uses by a class of 32 students. With the exception of some common classroom items, and living organisms, the FOSS equipment kits include almost everything teachers need.

Living Organisms

Live organisms are required, but not included, for the Populations and Ecosystems Grade 6 module. The organisms can be purchased separately via coupon cards. Please allow up to four weeks processing time for redemption of these cards.

Teacher Guide

Comprehensive guide in a 3-ring binder. Includes science background, detailed lesson plans, and resource lists, materials preparation, goals and objectives, at-a-glance investigation chart, science background, lesson plans, transparency masters, teacher answer sheets, assessments with masters and scoring guides, CD-ROM user guide, and references (books, multimedia, web sites).

Resources Book

FOSS middle school Resources is a book containing great information and readings that are used throughout a course. Each kit comes with 32 hard-cover copies of the full-color Resources book. They are intended to be used as classroom resources, shared by all students, but additional copies can be purchased. We recommend that each student have a copy of the Resources book.

Lab Notebook

Contains organizers and student sheets which can be photocopied for flexible use. Kit includes one lab notebook. Additional copies may be purchased separately.

Multimedia CD-ROM

Interactive instructional tool for use as a whole class demonstration tool as well as individual or small group. Each kit comes with five CD-ROMs, but multiple copies of the CD-ROM are available in lab packs of 5 or 10. These multimedia CD-ROMs are also avaiable online at www.fossweb.com
